Date Loaf (Louise Tatum)

This is my grandmother’s (Louise Tatum) recipe. It is my favorite and I make it every Christmas. Kay Hillje

In a saucepan mix:

2 cups sugar

1 c. dates (chopped, no seeds)

1 t. butter

½ c. cream/milk (regular evaporated milk works great)

1 c. nuts

Cook on medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Stir constantly until mixture reaches a soft ball stage. Remove from heat. Beat with spoon until mixture stiffens and loses shine. Pour candy into a damp smooth cloth. Roll back and forth in cloth until candy gets stiff. Set in cool place to cool and dry some. When cool and hard, slice and store in airtight container. *May be slightly sticky when slicing.
